
MARYVILLE -- Nine athletes have signed with five athletic programs at Northwest Missouri State University for the 2008-09 season. Two men's basketball players, Jake Reinders (Omaha, Neb.) and Blake Bales (Overland Park, Kan.), two softball players, Mallory Manning (North Liberty, Iowa) and Sarah Saladino (Davenport, Iowa), two track and field athletes, Virginia Fleer (Hoskins, Neb.) and Brandon Tunks (Cameron, Mo.) and three women's golfers, Sarah Stratton (Liberty, Mo.), Megan Chaney (Cameron, Mo.) and Olivia Hawkins (Tarkio, Mo.) have agreed to don the the Bearcat green.
MEN'S BASKETBALL
Jake Reinders (Omaha, Neb.)
NOTES: Will graduate from Omaha Skutt in 2008 ... A first team all-Omaha area selection his senior year ... Helped his high school team to three straight state tournament appearances ... A third team Super-State Journal Star selection ... A first-team all-state Class B selection in Nebraska ... Averaged 14.0 points and 7.1 rebounds a game his senior year.
Blake Bales (Overland Park, Kan.) - Transfer from Hutchinson Community College
NOTES: Graduated from Olathe East High School in 2007 ... A second team all-state selection his senior season ... Played one season at Hutchinson CC where he averaged 4.3 points per game and dished out 33 assists.
SOFTBALL
Mallory Manning (North Liberty, Iowa) - Transfer from Muscatine Community College
NOTES: Team Most Valuable Player (MVP) for the 2003 and 2004 seasons at Iowa City West High School ... A first team all-conference selection in 2005 ... Received first team all-state honors in 2006 ... A first team all-region and all-American selection at Muscatine.
Sarah Saladino (Davenport, Iowa) - Transfer from Muscatine Community College
NOTES: A first team all-district Southeast selection senior year of high school ... Also earned all-conference and all-state honors ... Conference Player of the Year ... A first team all-region selection at Muscatine and third team all-American selection ... Also played volleyball, track and basketball in high school.
TRACK/FIELD
Virginia Fleer (Hoskins, Neb.)
NOTES: Will graduate from Winside High School in 2008 ... A middle distance runner who also competed in cross country ... Best 1,600-meter time 5:12, which placed her second at the state meet in 2006 ... Member of the National Honor Society.
Brandon Tunks (Cameron, Mo.)
NOTES: Will graduated from Cameron High School in 2008 ... A sprinter who runs the 100- and 200-meter dashes ... Also played football and wrestled.
WOMEN'S GOLF
Sarah Stratton (Liberty, Mo.), Megan Chaney (Cameron, Mo.) and Olivia Hawkins (Tarkio, Mo.) will be the second recruiting class for head coach Pat McLaughlin. All three golfers will look to take the Northwest women's golf team into its second year of competition.
