Jim Williams Receives First Ever Bob Gregory Award
MARYVILLE – The Northwest Missouri State athletic department will introduce the first ever Bob Gregory Award to Jim Williams on Saturday, Nov. 10. The award will be presented during the football game between Northwest and Missouri Southern.
Director of Athletics Dr. Bob Boerigter commented, “Jim is the perfect choice to receive the initial Bob Gregory Award. He was a very competent and versatile athlete as an undergraduate, he was a student of Bob Gregory’s and he was as a life long educator.”
Williams was a three-sport athlete at Northwest playing football, wrestling and golf. In his playing days, Jim was defensive tackle graduating with a degree in physical education in 1970. Williams went on to coach football in St. Charles, Mo., where he guided St. Charles high school to a 1982 state championship and was voted Missouri 4A Football Coach of the Year.
In 17 years of coaching Williams fell one win short of 100 in his career, finishing with the most wins in St. Charles history. Jim still resides in St. Charles and is married to Ruth (formerly Hallquist). They have one son, Jamie, and one daughter, Julie.
The Bob Gregory award is presented by the athletic department to someone who has emulated the life, qualities and attributes of coach Gregory at Northwest or in Bearcat athletics. It will not be an annual award, but will be presented as it becomes well known that there is a person so deserving of this special recognition.
“We have been working on the development of an appropriate award or honor for some time for people who have been closely affiliated with Northwest athletics and have made significant contributions not only to Northwest but also to their professions,” said Boerigter.
Gregory, a graduate of Northwest, served as the head coach in baseball, basketball and tennis, while also assisting in both football and track and field during the mid 50s. Mr. Gregory was inducted into the Northwest Missouri State Hall of Fame in 1987 and helped establish the motto “Once a Bearcat, Always a Bearcat.”
