2007 M-Club Hall of Fame Class Announced
MARYVILLE -- The Northwest Missouri State athletic department announces the 2007 M-Club Hall of Fame class, which includes
Chris Greisen (football),
Kathy Behounek (nee' Kearns) (Cross Country/Track),
Ron "Jesse" James (Wrestling),
Russ Miller (Men's Basketball),
Scott Spurgeon (Baseball) and the
1980 Volleyball Team. These individuals along with the volleyball team will be formally introduced into the M-Club Hall of Fame in a ceremony on Friday, Oct. 26, 2007 on the eve of the Northwest Football Homecoming contest. Last year, the Hall of Fame class included Marty Albertson (baseball/football), Julie Collins (women's tennis), Joe Hurst (men's basketball) and Yasmine Osborn (women's tennis) along with the 1987 men's and women's tennis teams. With the 2007 class, the total of Hall of Fame individuals stands at 83 along with 35 teams to join the best in Northwest athletics. The first year for individual recognition was 1980 and teams were introduced beginning in 1989.
Chris Greisen - Football, Quarterback, 1995-98*1997 and 1998 AFCA All-America First Team pick at quarterback
*1998 Daktronics/CoSIDA First Team pick
*Two-time All-MIAA First Team selection
*Helped the 1998 National Championship Team to a 15-0 record; 1st team in college football history (only 1 other since) to win 15 games in a season
*Holds the conference record for yards passing in a season (all games) with 4,076 and touchdown passes with 38 in 1998
*Holds several school passing career records including passing yards (7,457) and touchdown passes (68)
*Part of the 1998 team to be inducted into the M-Club Hall of Fame in 2005
*Drafted by the NFL's Arizona Cardinals in 1999 with the 239th overall pick - currently plays for the Georgia Force in the Arena Football League.
Kathy Kearns - Cross Country & Track, 1994-97*
NCAA Post-graduate scholar
*First Northwest winner of State of Missouri NCAA Woman of the Year in 1998
*First and only Northwest cross-country runner to win the MIAA individual title in 1996
*Four-time All-MIAA and All-Region performer
*Earned cross country All-America status in 1996 & 1997
*School record holder in the 5,000K in cross country
*Twice named to the Academic All-America and Academic All-Region Teams (1996 & 1997)
*Led team to fifth-place finish at NCAA Championships in 1997
*Totaled at least three conference individual track titles
Ron "Jesse" James - Wrestling, 152-lb. weight class, 1963-67*
A two-time MIAA Champion and MIAA Wrestler of the Year in 1966 & 1967
*Holds school records for wins in a season (30); pins in a season (16); points in a season (116); career pins (37); career points (300)
*Finished third in 1967 NCAA Division II Tournament and sixth in 1966 Tournament to earn All-America status twice
*Holds the best career mark at Northwest at 74-8 in 152-lb. weight class
*Member of the Northwest Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1967.
*Was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2004.
Russ Miller - Men's Basketball, Forward, 1977-80*Three-time performer on the All-MIAA team.
*Currently ranks seventh all-time in scoring (1,282 pts); second all-time rebounder (837); second all-time shot blocker (94)
*Only player to have scored 1,200 points and collect 800 rebounds
*His average of 8.0 rebounds in 105 games ranked second all-time at Northwest
*Led the team three straight seasons in rebounding including an 9.5 average in 1980
*Four-year starter
Scott Spurgeon - Baseball, Catcher/3B, 1987-88*
All-America First Team selection as a third baseman in 1988
*Two-time All-MIAA First Team choice; as a catcher in 1987 and 3B in 1988
*Named MIAA hitter of the Year and MIAA Sportsman of the Year in 1988
*Holds school records for single-season doubles (22) and walks (35); career (.872) and season (1.007) slugging percentage
*His 17 homers, 147 total bases and .432 batting average in 1988 is tied for the second-best mark all-time
*Drafted by the Houston Astros in 1988 as a first baseman
1980 Volleyball Team*
Won the school's first and only conference championship, a MAIAW crown
*Posted a school-record 52 victories, going 52-9 under coach Pam Stanek
*The .852 winning percentage stands as a school record
*AIAW Region VI Division II Tournament Participants
