CLEVELAND – Northwest Missouri State jumped to 37th, an improvement of 11 positions, in the latest Division II standings of the U.S. Sports Academy Directors’ Cup released today. The ranking is based on the nationwide completion of men’s and women’s basketball, fencing, women’s ice hockey and men’s and women’s swimming. A final ranking occurs at the end of the spring athletic season with the Directors Cup awarded to the top ranked schools in NCAA Division I, Division II, Division III and the NAIA.
Northwest accumulated 75 points with the participation of both men’s and women’s basketball teams in the NCAA South Central Regional Tournament. The Bearcats were one of 23 Division II schools to have both men’s and women’s teams in the NCAA postseason. Northwest now stands with 213 total points in all sports completed this year, third among Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association schools. Central Missouri leads the league with 369.5 points and a seventh-place overall ranking.
Grand Valley State remains the leader in the Directors’ Cup with 699.5 points, nearly 200 points ahead of second-place California-San Diego's 507.5.
Northwest finished the 2005-06 season ranked 19th in the final Directors’ Cup rankings, due in part to a runner-up finish in football and Sweet Sixteen appearance in men’s basketball. Northwest also collected points with the finish of men’s track and field (indoor and outdoor), men’s and women’s tennis and softball.
