CLEVELAND -- Northwest Missouri State dropped seven positions from No. 41 in the fall standings to No. 48 in the U.S. Sports Academy Directors’ Cup Division II winter standings released today. The ranking is based on the nationwide completion of rifle, skiing, men’s and women’s indoor track and field and wrestling. A final ranking occurs at the end of the spring athletic season with the Directors Cup awarded to the top ranked schools in NCAA Division I, Division II, Division III and the NAIA.
Northwest tallied 48 points off a 24th place finish by the men’s indoor track and field team at the NCAA Championships, and stands with 138 points when carrying over points from the fall standings. Northwest stands sixth among Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) institutions, with the University of Central Missouri sitting seventh overall to lead the conference.
Grand Valley State remains the leader in the Directors’ Cup with 555.5 points, more than 130 points from second-place Adams (Colo.) State.
Northwest finished the 2005-06 season ranked 19th in the final Directors’ Cup rankings, due in part to a runner-up finish in football and Sweet Sixteen appearance in men’s basketball. Northwest also collected points with the finish of men’s track and field (indoor and outdoor), men’s and women’s tennis, and softball.
