CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A national runner-up finish in football ranks Northwest 41st nationwide in the U.S. Sports Academy Directors’ Cup Division II Fall Standings as of Dec. 21, 2006. The ranking is based on the nationwide completion of fall sports. A final ranking occurs at the end of the spring athletic season with the Directors Cup awarded to the top ranked schools in NCAA Division I, Division II, Division III, and the NAIA.
Northwest tallied 90 points to rank second among Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) institutions. The University of Central Missouri ranks 22nd with postseason appearances in men’s cross county, women’s soccer and volleyball. Missouri Southern, Pittsburg State, Truman State, and Missouri Western were also mentioned in the fall standings.
Grand Valley State leads all Division II schools after the fall sports season in part to a football championship and runner-up finish in women’s soccer. Grand Valley also had teams in men’s and women’s cross country and volleyball make the postseason.
Northwest finished the 2005-06 season ranked 19th in the final Directors’ Cup rankings, due in part to a runner-up finish in football and Sweet Sixteen appearance in men’s basketball. Northwest also collected points with the finish of men’s track and field (indoor and outdoor), men’s and women’s tennis, and softball.
