National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) Celebration Scheduled for Feb. 17
MARYVILLE -- (registration form (pdf)) Northwest Missouri State athletics will host special events for National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) on Saturday, Feb. 17 before the men's and women's basketball teams take on Missouri Southern in the afternoon. NGWSD events will take place in the Student Recreation Center. Admission is free and open to any members of the public. Activities begin at 11:00 am with check-in at 10:30 am. -- the activities are recommended for girls and boys up to age 10.
"This is the third year that Northwest Athletics has recognized this celebration," said Morris White, Northwest Director of Athletic Marketing and Promotions. "Our goal is to increase visibility among the community of our women's sports, including cheer and dance. The interaction the children will get from the Northwest female student-athletes will hopefully increase interest and attendance in those sports".
Pre-registration at 10:30 a.m. is recommended but not required. Those who pre-register will get free tickets to the women's basketball game beginning at 1:30 p.m. Free pizza and goodie bags to the first 200 registered kids will be handed out.
Current Northwest athletes will instruct participants in basic fundamentals related to their sport. Appearances from the Bearcat cheerleaders, steppers and Bobby Bearcat is on the schedule. There will be games and activities for all youth as well as giveaways and prizes.
This is the 21st annual celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day and is celebrated in all 50 states during the month of February. The purpose is to recognize female athletic participation and achievements.
