Northwest M-Club Hall of Fame Induction Set for Oct. 20

MARYVILLE, Mo. -- Northwest Missouri State athletics will hold its annual M-Club Hall of Fame banquet and induction ceremony on Oct. 20 at 6:30 p.m. The banquet falls on the evening prior to the Northwest Football Homecoming contest, and will take place in the J. W. Jones Student Union Ballroom. Tickets for the event are $17, and can be purchased by calling Michele Steinmeyer at (660) 562-1977.

The 2006 induction class will include Marty Albertson (football/baseball), Julie Collins (neé Callahan) (women’s tennis), Joe Hurst (men’s basketball), Yasmine Osborn (women’s tennis), and the 1987 men’s and women’s tennis teams. With the 2006 class, the M-Club Hall of Fame includes 78 individuals and 34 teams. The first year for individual inductions was 1980, and teams were inducted beginning in 1989.

Albertson was a two-time First Team All-Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) selection in baseball and football. He was a member of the Bearcat baseball NCAA playoff teams from 1975-78 and the Bearcat football MIAA Championship team of 1974.

The first NCAA Tennis Tournament qualifier from Northwest, Collins appeared in the national tournament three times in 1990, 92-93. The 1993 MIAA Most Valuable Player, Collins won the conference singles championship twice in her career and led the team to the conference title in 1992-93.

Hurst left Northwest in 1986 as the career leader in blocked shots (153) and stands in the top-five for points (1,580) and rebounds (777) in a career. A two-time All-MIAA First Team honoree, Hurst led the Bearcats to the NCAA South Central Regional in 1984.

The MIAA No. 1 Singles Champion in 1997 and 1998, Osborn holds the Northwest season records in singles wins with 27 and doubles victories with 28. She was named an All-American in 1998 after going undefeated 22-0 in singles, and led the Bearcat tennis teams to three consecutive NCAA Division II Tournament appearances.

The 1987 men’s and women’s tennis teams were the first teams from the same school to win the MIAA title in the same season. The women captured five of the six singles championships, while the men went 16-4 in dual matches.
