Colt Receives National Athletic Training Honor

MARYVILLE, Mo. -- Northwest Missouri State Head Athletic Trainer David "D.C." Colt was awarded recently with the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA) College / University Athletic Trainer of the Year. D.C. will be formally recognized for this achievement at the organization's annual meeting in mid-June.

"I am humbled to be honored in such a way," said Colt. "It reflects well on my staff and the commitment they have to the athletes at Northwest and the profession of athletic training."

D.C. has been the head athletic trainer at Northwest since 1981. Prior to coming to Northwest, Colt spent three years (1978-1981) as an assistant trainer at Temple University. He was also an athletic trainer at professional basketball clinics, along with Camp Anglewood (soccer camp) and NCAA National Youth Sports Camps.

Colt received his bachelor’s degree from West Virginia University in Athletic Training in 1977. He followed that up by getting his masters in Education at Northwest Missouri State in 1978. Colt is currently pursuing his Educational Doctorate from the University of Missouri.

DC is also an active member of the Maryville community; he works as a volunteer for the American Cancer Society and Nodaway County Chapter. He is a member of the First United Methodist Church, volunteering as a Administrative Council Member. Colt also was a Survivor Speaker for the 1999 Nodaway County Relay for Life. Colt also volunteered in the Mission-United Methodist Church in 1999 after a tornado damaged Oklahoma City.

He has also received numerous awards including inductions into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in 2006; Missouri Athletic Trainers Association Sports Medicine Hall of Fame in 2002; and being named the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer in 2004.
