Student Mentor

Qualifications

Communications:

Maintain consistent contact with assigned participants through monthly appointments
Schedule and conduct weekly mentoring sessions with participants who were conditionally admitted to the University
Utilize effective oral communications when answering questions
Maintain frequent and clear communication with Coordinator, Counselor and participants
Keep accurate records of client service and contacts
Develop and initiate individual study plans for assigned participants
Conduct annual needs assessment for each assigned participant
Schedule five week grade appointments with coordinator

Critical/Creative Thinking and Problem Solving:

Track academic progress and counseling needs
Resolve needs of clients
Answer students' questions
Make referrals when needed
Help students develop good note taking skills, study habits and test-taking strategies
Identify and utilize career exploration services
Organize, plan and facilitate annual Leadership Training and Interview Skills Workshops
Provide proctoring services for students with disabilities

Computer:

Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access; Internet
Knowledge of file maintenance and Northwest network

Self-Directed Learning:

Have ability to recognize, initiate and complete various tasks
Provide appropriate resource materials
Research study skills and academic enrichment activities

Competence in a Discipline:

Provide pre-tutoring for participants
Develop and lead content specific study groups which target academic skill development and enhancement

Personal/Social Development:

Exhibit dependability and punctuality
Exhibit professionalism and courtesy
Pay attention to detail

Note: The application requests a Fall schedule. As the application due date is before registration is open to all students, a copy of the schedule is not required to apply, but is requested when it becomes available.
