Construction and Renovation

Residential Life has developed a 12 year Master Plan to address facility and programmatic needs of the Residence Halls. Renovations begin in the residence halls in 1993 with Roberta Hall. By the conclusion of the plan each building will have been renovated. The four-phase plan is designed to be completed in the fall of 2013.

Phase I

Phase I of the Residential Life Master Plan was completed in August 2004. The new buildings consist of 360 suite beds, 200 apartment beds and a renovated conference center.

Tower Suites

The new suites consist of two buildings, each being three stories, and are located between Phillips and Franken Halls. The suites have 58- four bed units and 61- 2 bed units.  A suite is designed specifically to meet the needs of sophomore and junior students, by providing more privacy but preserving valuable community amenities. Laundry, vending and cooking facilities will be located on each floor.

The Station The newly renovated conference center conference center is now called “The Station.” The Station features a front desk for the Tower Suites, mailboxes, administrative offices, coffee shop, convenience store, meeting rooms, and gathering spaces. It is open 24 hours a day for students to study, buy groceries or hang out with friends.

Phase II

Phase II of the Residential Life Master Plan will involve the removal of Perrin and Hudson Halls beginning in Spring 2005 and finishing in Fall 2007. Freshman Suites will be added in their space with new Perrin and Hudson Halls.  The new aesthetic and contemporary designed buildings will feature 498 beds and will add to the freshman living experience. The new suites will also consist of study and commons spaces, computers, community spaces and exterior and interior public spaces with different degrees of privacy. Each wing will have 10 rooms to house 20 students. The rooms will be a “Pod” concept featuring 5 room neighborhoods. Hudson and Perrin are centrally located on campus and, after construction will be a premier housing choice for freshman.

Phase III

Phases I and II of the Residential Life Master Plan follow an aggressive schedule in order to quickly address some of the immediate needs of our students.

The purpose of the master plan is to provide students with a variety of housing options during their experience at Northwest. Phase III has been designed as a decision point. It is difficult to anticipate what students will want in the future. With this in mind Phase III is scheduled to begin in 2009 with 2008 being used as a planning and decision point.

In order to meet the needs of students we anticipate adding 200 beds of apartment style housing in Phase III. These apartments will be immediately north of the apartments being built in Phase I.

Phase IV

Phase IV is scheduled to begin in 2011. This phase will be the final stage in completing our freshman living environments. This phase has two options. As we approach Phase IV, it is difficult to know what the needs of students will be and make a decision on the best way to proceed. This phase will be dependent on the condition of Dieterich and Millikan Halls.

A decision will not be made in the facilities until approximately 2010.  At the conclusion of Phase IV, Phillips Hall will be removed.
