Shelter in Place/Lock Down/Active Shooter
Several recent and very tragic shootings in public spaces around the country have heightened the public's concern and awareness about what steps to take if ever confronted with a similar situation. The Northwest Missouri State University University Police Department offers the following recommendations and would ask that you share them with members of the campus community you are in contact with.
If you are involved in a situation where someone has entered the area and started shooting, the following are a list of actions that are recommended:
- Exit the building immediately.
- Notify anyone you may encounter to exit he building immediately.
- Notify the University Police Department at 911 or 660.562.1254.
- Give the Dispatcher the following information: Your name, Location of the incident(be specific as possible), Number of shooters(if known), Your location, Number of persons who may be involved.
If you are directly involved and exiting the building is not possible, the following actions are recommended:
- Go to the nearest room or office.
- Close and lock the door.
- Cover the door windows.
- Keep quiet and act as if no one is in the room.
- Do Not answer the door.
- Notify the University Police Department at 911 or 660.562.1254.
- Give the Dispatcher the following information: Your name, Your location(be specific as possible), Number of shooters(if known), Identification of shooter(if known), Number of persons who may be involved.
- If you are directly confronted with the armed intruder we recommend that you use any instrument and/or any tactics to defeat and/or escape the armed intruder.
- Wait for University Police Officers to assist you out of the building.
