Academic advising is a teaching process that takes place outside the classroom. The process addresses the student's entire undergraduate experience and educates the student about the higher education continuum. Advising is concerned with the development of the student through curricular and co-curricular means. Career and postgraduate planning are included in the process of academic advisement.
Quality advisement must be based on the shared responsibility of the student and their academic advisor. Advisors also serve as mentors, role models and career guides through their unique position as the coordinator of the undergraduate experience. Through their multifaceted responsibilities, good advisors help students to realize the maximum benefits available to them and how to best obtain a quality and well-rounded educational experience.
