The Dougherty family, of LaVista, Nebraska, is Northwest Missouri State University’s 2017 Family of the Year, a recognition bestowed each fall during the University’s Family Weekend festivities.
Sponsored by Campus Dining, the Family of the Year recognition comes with a $750 scholarship and other prizes. The family was introduced during halftime of Saturday’s Family Weekend football game.
The family includes Tyler Dougherty, a sophomore business management major; Brett, a biology and psychology major; and Brooke Dougherty, a senior at Papillion-LaVista High School, who plans to attend Northwest next fall and study elementary and special education.
They are the children of Greg Dougherty, a 1992 Northwest graduate in his 26th year of teaching in the Papillion-LaVista School District, and Corinne Dougherty, a graduate of Creighton University but “one of the biggest fans in the crowd” at Bearcat games.
Brett nominated the family for the award.
“It’s very exciting,” Corinne said. “We are huge supporters of Northwest Missouri State. We just got off a great year with the boys winning the national championship, and we’re ready for our third child to go to Northwest.”
Both Brett and Tyler are members of Bearcat men’s basketball team and actively participate in community activities such as Women’s Intersport Network for Kansas City (WIN for KC), Big Brothers Big Sister, Special Olympics, Make-a-Wish, Lettuce Dream. They also read to children attending Northwest’s Horace Mann Laboratory School.
In addition to helping the Bearcats win their 2017 NCAA Division II National Championship, Brett has been named to the MIAA Academic Honor Roll each of the last three years, and Tyler joined the MIAA Academic Honor Roll for 2016-17.
Brett said he was attracted to Northwest to not only play basketball but by the friendly and supportive atmosphere. Tyler and Brooke noticed it, too, during their visits to the campus, prompting them to follow their Brett’s path.
“You could just tell it was a great place,” Brett said. “You don’t hear bad things about it from people that go here.”
In its application, the family said it enjoys supporting Northwest basketball and the “incredible fans every time we go to Maryville” while supporting local dining and business establishments. Greg and Corinne regularly coordinate events for other parents while the team is traveling and host the student-athletes at their home for dinners. They also serve as parent ambassadors for students in the Omaha area who attend Northwest.
Each fall, Family of the Year recipients are self-nominated or nominated by members of the Northwest community. Applicants are judged on the family's commitment to Northwest, academic success, service and the family’s consistent and sustained involvement over several generations.
