Northwest Missouri State University fraternity men recently awarded $1,027 to the Children and Family Center of Northwest Missouri in support of its services.

The students raised the money April 6 during the Northwest Interfraternity Council’s annual “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” event to show support for women and raise awareness about domestic violence. Participating men don women’s high heels and walk a one-mile route on the campus.

This spring’s event drew 95 fraternity men, representing each of Northwest’s 15 recognized fraternity chapters. The men also were joined by Lt. Mike Ceperley and Sgt. Anthony Williams of the University Police Department and Brian Wagner, volunteer coordinator at the Children and Family Center.

Each participant contributed $10 for the right to step into a pair of heels and walk a campus route that began at Northwest’s Centennial Garden, passed through the Memorial Bell Tower and traveled around Colden Pond before returning to Centennial Garden.

Austin Poehling, vice president of philanthropy for Interfraternity Council, said he is proud of the event and its support of the Children and Family Center.

“I really like the way we put this on,” he said. ”It shows that we support women and are against domestic violence.”

The Children and Family Center provides shelter and a nurturing environment for individuals and families who have experienced domestic violence or sexual assault. The center helps survivors learn and grow through advocacy and dedicated services.

The center also provides community education in the northwest Missouri counties of Nodaway, Atchison, Holt, Gentry and Worth. For more information about the Children and Family Center, visit www.childrenandfamilycenter.org

The Interfraternity Council (IFC) is the administrative board of fraternity men who represent the best interest of Northwest fraternities. IFC seeks to promote a united Greek community dedicated to the guiding values of all fraternities. IFC coordinates educational, social and recruitment programs for chapters and establishes the framework and standards that all fraternities uphold.
