Northwest Missouri State University appears to be on its way to maintaining its stake for another year as the top blood donor among higher education institutions in the region after results of last week’s Student Senate blood drive in cooperation with the Community Blood Center were announced.
The Northwest Student Senate sponsored its annual fall blood drive Oct. 11-13 to boost blood supplies in northwest Missouri. The Community Blood Center is the primary supplier of blood and blood components in the region, serving more than 65 local hospitals and medical centers.
The Community Blood Center reports it collected 392 units of blood at Northwest last week. That was enough to impact 1,176 lives and win a competition with Missouri Western State University to collect the most blood.
“Every day over 600 blood products leave Community Blood Center going to hospitals to treat the needs of patients,” David Graham, executive director of the Community Blood Center, said. “We could not meet this need and fulfill our mission without the generous support of volunteer blood donors and the hard work and dedication of individuals and organizations who sponsor blood drives.
“I am always grateful for the support we receive from area colleges and universities, but as a Northwest graduate I am especially proud of the productive blood drives consistently produced there.”
Northwest outpaced its daily totals from last year’s fall blood drive, collecting more than 100 units on each day of the blood drive.
“I would like to thank everyone who donated blood,” said Lucy Hilliard, a student senator and junior industrial psychology and marketing major from Batavia, Illinois, who helped coordinate the blood drive. “We could not have done this without all of our Bearcats, and I cannot thank everyone enough for all of the support. We do indeed bleed green.”
Student Senate annually sponsors fall, winter and spring blood drives in cooperation with the Community Blood Center to boost blood supplies in northwest Missouri.
In September, for the second consecutive year, the Community Blood Center recognized Northwest and its Student Senate as the top university among participating institutions in the area. In 2015, Northwest donors provided 768 units of blood, more than 530 more than the second-place university.
During the 2014 calendar year, Northwest donors provided 612 units of blood. During the 2014-2015 academic year, Northwest donors provided a record-breaking 745 units.
Blood from volunteer donors assists cancer patients recovering from the rigors of chemotherapy, car crash victims needing blood for emergency surgeries or mothers needing blood as the result of traumatic birth deliveries. It is estimated three lives are saved with every unit collected.
Northwest has sponsored blood drives since at least 1973 and donated nearly 7,000 units of blood since 2000 – enough to save more than 21,000 lives.
