The Cofer family, of Lake Saint Louis, Mo., is Northwest Missouri State University’s 2016 Family of the Year, a recognition bestowed each fall during the University’s Family Weekend festivities.
Sponsored by Campus Dining, the Family of the Year recognition comes with a $750 scholarship and other prizes. The family was introduced during halftime of Saturday’s Family Weekend football game.
Madison Cofer, a junior psychology major, nominated the family for the award.
Accompanying her at Northwest are her sisters, Meagan, who is pursuing her master’s degree in guidance and counseling, and Marlee, a freshman meta major. They are the daughters of Scott and Kelly Cofer.
Madison is a member of the Phi Mu sorority, for which she serves as vice president of chapter development and chair of the Sunshine Committee. She also serves as Panhellenic Recruitment Gamma Chi, Homecoming Variety Show co-chair and Phi Mu Zeta Lambda representative for the National Phi Mu Leadership Retreat. She is a member of the National Honor Society of Leadership and Success.
Additionally, she volunteers with the Humane Society, Special Olympics, Children’s Miracle Network, Phi Mu Foundation and as a psychological research assistant. Away from Northwest she is employed with Bethesda Lutheran Community as a youth development worker.
Meagan earned her bachelor’s degree at Northwest in psychology in 2014. She is an alumna of the Phi Mu sorority, for which she served as parliamentarian and Homecoming banner co-chair. She was a member of Up ‘til Dawn and the Social Sciences Research Group. She was a member of the National Honor Society and a recipient of the C. & C. Taylor Guidance and Counseling Scholarship.
She volunteered with the Humane Society, Special Olympics, Children’s Miracle Network, Phi Mu Foundation and as a psychological research assistant. She has worked as a youth development worker at The Learning Center in Maryville; assisted with programs at Eugene Field Elementary School in Maryville, including its Growing Opportunities afterschool program; and as a substitute teacher for the Liberty School District. She worked last year as a graduate assistant with Horace Mann Laboratory School’s Bearcat Club afterschool program and with the Department of Behavioral Sciences.
The Cofer family enjoys attending Northwest football games, including the national championship game in 2013 and 2015, and they are members of the Bearcat Booster Club. They also attend Phi Mu Dad and Mom Days.
Each fall, Family of the Year recipients are self-nominated or nominated by members of the Northwest community. Applicants are judged on the family's commitment to Northwest, academic success, service and the family’s consistent and sustained involvement over several generations.
