6th annual 5K, neon run to benefit Backpack Buddies

The Northwest Missouri State University Student Dietetics Association (NSDA) will sponsor its Sixth Annual 5K Fun Run/Walk to raise funding for Backpack Buddies of Nodaway County on Saturday, Oct. 8.

Participants are encouraged to wear neon clothing for the event, which begins at 8:30 a.m. at the circle drive east of the Administration Building on the Northwest campus. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m.

Participants may register prior to the 5K online at www.nwmissouri.edu/rsvp/nsda5k.  Registration is $20 per person. Participants who register on or before Sept. 28 will receive a neon T-shirt.

NSDA also is teaming with Northwest’s Robert and Virginia Foster Fitness Center to offer weekly workout plans for individuals interested in preparing for a 5K. Participants may pick up workout plans at the Foster Center’s front desk. The fitness center also will display a penny jar at its front desk to raise additional funding for backpack buddies. For more information about the workout plans, contact Valerie Ruby at the Foster Fitness Center at s514916@mail.nwmissouri.edu.

Individuals or businesses wishing to donate without participating in the walk may pick up a donation form in the foods and nutrition office, located in Room 311 of the Administration Building or mail a donation to NSDA, 800 University Drive, Administration Building Room 311, Maryville, MO 64468.

Backpack Buddies is the supplemental weekend feeding program of Second Harvest Community Food Bank. Children are provided with a healthy breakfast, a healthy lunch and a healthy snack each weekend during the school year, including extended breaks. Children receive food based on four rotating menus that are offered throughout the year. Nodaway County Backpack Buddies partners with The Ministry Center in Maryville to serve all public elementary schools in the county and provides meals to 288 children during the school year.

Last year’s NSDA 5K raised $1,000 for Backpack Buddies, which was enough to provide backpacks of food to seven students for the entire school year.
