The Missouri Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) recognized Northwest Missouri State University as one of Missouri’s Most Supportive Employers at its annual awards dinner July 8 at the Capitol Plaza Hotel in Jefferson City, Missouri.
Northwest received the Seven Seals Award for meritorious leadership and initiative in support of men and women who serve in the National Guard and Reserve. Attending the ceremony on behalf of Northwest were Facility Services staff members Robert Redig and John Sportsman, who nominated Northwest for the honor.
“I just wanted to offer something back,” Sportsman said of his decision to nominate Northwest for the recognition.
Sportsman has been a member of the Army National Guard for 36 years, serving as command sergeant major for the 1-129th Field Artillery Battalion in Maryville and the 110th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade in Kansas City.
Sportsman has been employed with Northwest since 1990, including through two deployments. He works in plumbing at Northwest.
“While I was deployed they took care of me,” Sportsman said. “It’s a great place to work, and they take care of the military.”
ESGR, a Department of Defense office, is comprised of volunteers and staff who develop and promote employer support for Guard and Reserve service by advocating relevant initiatives, recognizing outstanding support, increasing awareness of applicable laws, and resolving conflict between employers and service members.
