Student Media members at Northwest Missouri State University captured awards this month when students attended the College Media Business and Advertising Managers Convention in Denver and the College Media Association’s Spring National Media Convention in New York.
The award winners included Northwest December graduate Jacob Hubbert, who won first place in the College Media Association’s inaugural film festival contest in the Best Short Creative Film category.
Hubbert’s film, “The 3 Date Rule,” was produced last fall as part of Justin Ross’ Advanced Video Production course.
“Jacob's film utilized professional production techniques taught in our Advanced Production class and featured performances by the talented actors of our own theater department,” Ross said. “Northwest may not be a film school, but this award proves that the creative narrative work we’re producing can absolutely compete and even earn recognition on a national level."
Hubbert said the win was due more to the students who worked with him than his own work.
“I deliberately surrounded myself with talented individuals who I knew I could communicate my ideas with and would challenge me with the feedback I needed to improve the film,” he said. “Feedback was and continues to be extremely important to me as a filmmaker. Just because an idea makes sense in my head, doesn't mean it’s communicated to the audience. I was always seeking it out, especially during the edit, and it made for a stronger film.”
Also at the College Media Association convention, the Northwest Missourian advertising staff placed second for Best Print Ad, competing among national publications regardless of format or school size.
At the business and advertising managers conference, the Northwest Missourian advertising staff earned two first place awards for Best Self Promotion Ad (color) and Best Audio or Underwriting Spot (16 seconds or longer) as well as a third place award for Best Self Promotion Ad (black and white).
Leslie Murphy, business and advertising manager for Northwest Student Media, said the students’ hard work was evident in the awards they brought home.
“These wins not only validate everything our students have worked so hard on this year, but it also motivates them to keep performing at a high level,” Murphy said.
