The Missouri Council for Social Studies honored Northwest Missouri State University alumnus Derek Frieling as its Teacher of the Year this spring.
Frieling teaches world history courses at Lafayette High School in St. Joseph, Missouri. He earned his bachelor’s degree in 1995 in secondary education social science and his master’s degree in history in 1999, both from Northwest.
Frieling was recognized during the council’s annual conference Feb. 26-27 in Columbia, Missouri.
Winners are selected by their abilities to develop and use materials creatively and effectively; incorporate innovative or verifiably effective instructional strategies and techniques; use new scholarship in the social studies fields; foster a spirit of inquiry and development of skills related to acquiring, organizing, processing, and using information; foster the development of democratic beliefs and values needed for citizen participation in the classroom, school, and community settings; and their activity in workshops, curriculum development and associations.
