Northwest hosting presentations on race, social justice issues

Northwest Missouri State University will host a pair of authors in coming weeks who will address race and social justice issues.

Dr. Juanita Simmons, emerita associate professor in the Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis Department at the College of Education at the University of Missouri-Columbia, will visit Northwest Wednesday, Feb. 10, to give a presentation, titled “Race in America: Contemporary Times vs. Historic Times.” The lecture begins at 6 p.m. in The Station’s center meeting room.

Simmons is an author and specializes in research studies focusing on race, racial dynamics, and social justice issues. Her presentation is sponsored by Northwest’s Office of Multicultural Student Success as part of Black History Month.

Tim Wise, a prominent anti-racist educator and the author, will visit the University Feb. 18. Wise will offer a lecture at 6 p.m. in the Ron Houston Center for the Performing Arts and lead a workshop for Northwest employees from 2 to 3:30 p.m. in the J.W. Jones Student Union Boardroom.

Named one of “25 Visionaries Who are Changing Your World” by Utne Reader, Wise is the author of seven books, including “White Like Me: Reflections on Race from a Privileged Son” and “Dear White America: Letter to a New Minority.” He has provided anti-racism training to teachers nationwide as well as with physicians and medical industry, corporate, government, entertainment, military and law enforcement officials.

Wise’s visit is sponsored by Northwest’s committee for the University’s Strategic Objective 3: Enhancing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Practices.
