Northwest to sponsor fourth cohort of Institute for Social Justice

Northwest Missouri State University’s Office of Human Resources and Office of Multicultural Student Success this spring will offer its fourth annual Institute for Social Justice, a collaborative effort with the goal of advancing intercultural competence among University employees.

The program consists of nine sessions, from 3 to 5 p.m. on Thursdays, beginning Feb. 11. Sessions are 3 to 5 p.m. Participants must attend all sessions to graduate. A graduation ceremony is set for Wednesday, April 20.

The program offers social justice training to Northwest employees while providing participants with a transformational experience to explore their own social justice skills, learn how they show up in the world and advance their own intercultural competence.

“It is not a standard lecture session,” said Steve Bryant, director of intercultural affairs at Northwest. “It revolves around open dialogue, conversations and participation. It gives participants the opportunity to become comfortable with being uncomfortable about difficult dialogue around racial inequities. We strive to move from fear, pain and paralysis to compassion, connection and collaboration.”

The Northwest Institute for Social Justice originated in the spring of 2013, and 13 Northwest employees graduated from the program. To date, 45 Northwest employees have completed the program.

The sessions include short video clips, presentations and conversations. Participants will receive a journal to encourage self-reflection. Session topics are listed below.
