Horace Mann sponsoring pajama drive, giving tree

The Horace Mann Laboratory School at Northwest Missouri State University is collecting pajamas, books and other gifts for children and families in need this holiday season.

Horace Mann is participating in the Scholastic’s Great Bedtime Story Pajama Drive to benefit Pajama Program, a non-profit organization that provides new pajamas and books to children in need.

Since 2009, schools throughout the country have risen to the challenge and donated nearly 350,000 pairs of new pajamas. The Scholastic Reading Club has more than matched those numbers with nearly 700,000 new books donated directly to Pajama Program, which distributes the donations.

Families are invited to participate by bringing a new pair of pajamas to Horace Mann before Wednesday, Dec. 16. Families also may call the school at 660.562.1233 to arrange a pickup.

Pajamas must be brand new and must be in complete sets or nightgowns. Pajamas in all sizes are needed, from newborn to adult, and pajamas in children’s sizes must be manufactured as pajama to ensure they are flame retardant and safe.

Additionally, Horace Mann has a “giving tree,” located inside its front entrance, that is adorned with tag ornaments listing the needs of local families.

Each tag ornament contains a needed item, such as clothing, a toy, or household supplies. Families are invited to select tags, purchase the listed items and return the wrapped items to the tree. Horace Mann will then deliver the gifts to families before Christmas.

Horace Mann is a laboratory school located on the campus of Northwest Missouri State University. Established in 1906 as a learning facility for University students, Horace Mann provides profession-based learning experiences for pre-service teachers. Students enrolled at the school benefit from a strong academic experience, a low teacher-to-student ratio, and innovative instruction techniques and strategies.
