Northwest hosts fifth graders from Independence school

About 70 fifth graders and their classroom teachers from Fairmount Elementary School in the Independence School District spent Monday, Oct. 26, at Northwest Missouri State University to attend classes, tour the campus and experience life on a college campus.

The University’s Department of Professional Education partners with Fairmount to provide field and practicum experiences for Northwest students studying literacy and special education methods.

“This school is in a very high poverty location with nearly half the students being English language learners,” said Dr. Vicki Seeger, Northwest assistant professor of professional education. “Most of these students have never been on a college campus.”

In addition to being greeted by Northwest’s Horace Mann Laboratory School students and spending time in Everett Brown Hall Education Hall, the fifth graders attended class sessions in the Garrett-Strong Science Building and Martindale Hall, met with Director International Affairs Dr. Jeff Foot and Director of Multicultural Student Success Steve Bryant, and toured the campus with literacy methods students and Student Ambassadors.

The Department of Professional Education offers undergraduate programs in elementary education, early childhood education, special education, middle school education and early childhood special education. The department also offers master's degree programs in elementary education, early childhood education, special education, middle school education, reading specialist and English language learners.

The department prepares future teachers and administrators for the state's and nation's school systems. Northwest is accredited at the national level through the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation and by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
