Student involvement office announces Homecoming contest winners

Northwest Missouri State ended its 2015 Homecoming week Sunday with the awards ceremony announcing winners of competitions throughout the annual celebration.

Northwest hosted its Homecoming week, “Rockin’ Around the Bell Tower,” Oct. 18-25, with a variety of activities, including traditions such as the office decorating contest, Variety Show, International Flag-Raising Ceremony, parade and the Homecoming football game. The University also welcomed the class of 1965 during its annual Golden Years Society Reunion at the Northwest Alumni House.

During Thursday’s performance of the variety show, Max Maldorf and Rebecca Beckler were crowned as the 2015 Homecoming king and queen. Malldorf is a senior pre-dentistry major from Koenigswinter, Germany, and Beckler is a senior chemistry major with a biochemistry emphasis from Friend, Neb.

During the University’s ninth annual Homecoming Canned Art Contest Oct. 19, students and organizations assembled displays of perishable food items to be donated to the Maryville Ministry Center. Northwest collected about 3,020 pounds of food through the contest, in which 13 student organizations participated.

Additionally, the office wing housing Northwest’s academic deans, located on the second floor of the Administration Building, took first place in the University’s office decorating contest. The Department of Fine and Performing Arts took second place, and the Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Information Systems office in the Garrett-Strong Science Building took third place.

This year’s Homecoming philanthropy event involved penny wars and campus organizations collected $700 to benefit the Nodaway Humane Society with the Phi Delta Theta fraternity scoring the most points during the contest.

The 2015 Homecoming Executive Board included co-chairs Maggie Carmichael, Trish Hyatt and Megan Jackman, with assistance from Graduate Assistant Kathryn Samson.
