The Welch family of Grain Valley, Mo., is Northwest Missouri State University’s 2015 Family of the Year, a recognition bestowed each fall during the University’s Family Weekend festivities.
Sponsored by Campus Dining, the Family of the Year recognition comes with a $750 scholarship and other prizes. The family was introduced during halftime of Saturday’s Family Weekend football game.
Dallas Welch, a senior mathematics major, nominated the family for the award.
“Northwest has been a home for me and it really is a family atmosphere,” Dallas said. “It feels like home when I’m up here, and I get to share that with my family now, too. I wear more Bearcat green than I do anything else.”
Joining Dallas at Northwest this fall is his brother, Jackson Welch, a freshman psychology major. The family also includes Nathan Welch, a 2004 alumnus receiving his degree in interactive digital media; Ashley (Redfearn) Welch, a 2003 alumna receiving her degree in elementary education; and Ashley (Wittmeyer) Welch, who earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary education in 2004 and a master’s degree in reading in 2006.
Dallas, Jackson and Nathan are the sons of Jamie and Bob Welch.
Dallas has been active in student organizations at Northwest, including the Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity, for which he serves as senior advisor and previously served as president, secretary and was named Most Outstanding Active Member for 2013 and 2015. He also is a member of Order of Omega and the Phi Mu Epsilon honorary mathematics fraternity. He has volunteered with the Homecoming Committee, Special Olympics and St. Jude’s Up ‘til Dawn. He has worked on campus as a student ambassador, SOAR leader and peer advisor.
Nathan Welch was a member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity. Ashley (Redfearn) Welch was a member of the Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority, and Ashley (Wittmeyer) Welch was a member of the Delta Zeta sorority. Like Dallas, they served in numerous roles and volunteered many hours as Northwest students.
Families are self-nominated or nominated by members of the Bearcat community. Applicants are judged on the family's commitment to Northwest, academic success, service and the family’s consistent and sustained involvement over several generations.
