Dr. Mary Shepherd, professor in the Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Information Systems, has been elected to a three-year term as governor of the Missouri section of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA).
The MAA aims to advance the mathematical sciences by supporting math education at all levels, research and scholarship; providing professional development; influencing public policy; and promoting public appreciation and understanding of mathematics.
Governors serve as the primary representative of their section and hold fiduciary responsibilities for MAA operations. Governors annually review and approve budgets, debate and approve MAA policies and changes to existing policies, in addition to considering and approving changes to MAA bylaws.
Shepherd, who begins her term as governor July 1, has been active in the Missouri section of MAA for nearly 14 years and previously served as section secretary/treasurer and chair.
Shepherd joined the Northwest faculty in 2001 and teaches a variety of mathematics courses. Her academic interests are geometry and reading mathematics.
