Practical Sustainability LCC has entered into an agreement with Northwest Missouri State University to become a tenant of the Dean L Hubbard Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE).
Dr. Earl R. Beaver, managing partner of Practical Sustainability says greater synergy and growth potential are possible for the company by locating in close proximity to the faculty and staff of the CIE’s analytical laboratory.
“We have outgrown our office and lab facilities in Chesterfield (Mo.) and look forward to working in the larger and more comprehensive lab and office areas that the CIE offers,” Beaver said.
In addition to directly utilizing the resources provided at Northwest, Practical Sustainability intends to employ students to better prepare them for the workforce.
Practical Sustainability has three business functions that consist of development and implementation of sustainability tools and metrics, development of environmentally focused analytical tools, and recovery of value from scrap materials from the environment, such as used tires.
Practical Sustainability’s lab staff, comprised of Jonathan L. Wistrom and Skyler L. Wistrom, have begun the process of relocating laboratory equipment and starting a new research program. Skyler and Jonathan both reside in Maryville, and Jonathan is a 2008 graduate of Northwest.
“The move to Maryville and expansion of facilities will greatly accelerate Practical Sustainability’s laboratory development work,” Beaver said. “The bulk of work on sustainability tools and metrics will remain in Chesterfield for the foreseeable future.”
CIE Director Larry Lee said, “The Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship is uniquely positioned to help entrepreneurial companies like Practical Sustainability LLC access resources through the business community such as the Missouri Small Business and Technology Development Center, Northwest Missouri State University and other business assistance programs that are available to help them develop the skills and build relationships they need to be successful.”
The CIE is designated a Missouri Innovation Center and was ranked last year by University Business Incubator (UBI) Index at 21st in the University Global Top 25 Rankings, a survey of more than 300 incubators in 67 countries.
Located on the north edge of the Northwest campus, the CIE is a mixed-use incubator with emphasis on technology-based, start-up companies. It also provides assistance to existing small businesses and encourages development of new small businesses. The 46,679 square-foot facility includes three lab analysis research areas, a shared scientific instrument room and 9,000 square feet of tenant office space, while the academic wing contains more than 16,000 square feet of highly specialized teaching and research labs and offices.
The facility is positioned within a two-hour driving radius of Kansas City, Des Moines and Omaha, providing companies with access to more than 1.5 million people. At the same time, companies located at the CIE enjoy the benefits of a consistently strong work-ethic and business friendly environment in a smaller rural setting.
