Northwest Missouri State University student Kendra Rieckhoff, a senior agricultural education major from Hughesville, Mo., is one of 30 students across the country selected to participate in the 2014 National Agriscience Preservice Teacher Program at the National FFA Convention in Louisville, Ky.
The program is a valuable opportunity for future agricultural education teachers to enhance skills in the classroom and interact with pre-service teachers across the nation, Rieckhoff said.
“It also helps bring ideas about on how to utilize agriscience in the classroom,” Rieckhoff said. “Better prepared teachers means students coming out of high school programs are going to be ahead of the game and function in the agricultural, food, fiber and natural resource system.”
The National Agriscience Preservice Teacher Program promotes inquiry-based teaching methods and the enhancement of science in agriculture to preservice teachers in agricultural education throughout the nation. It is an interactive hands-on agriscience training program and selected participants are challenged to develop inquiry-based lessons to use during their student teaching experience as well as when they enter the teaching profession. The program is sponsored by DuPont Office of Education.
“Inquiry-based learning is extremely important in the agricultural education world, and this will give me an advantage and experience that I will need when applying and interviewing for jobs,” Rieckhoff said. “This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and I’m so thankful that I am able to take a hold of it.”
Other 2014 preservice teacher participants represent Kansas State University, Clemson University, North Carolina State University, North Dakota State University, University of Minnesota, University of Wisconsin-River Falls, Delaware Valley College, University of Minnesota, University of Kentucky, South Dakota State University, The Pennsylvania State University, California Polytechnic State University-San Luis Obispo, Virginia Tech, Iowa State University and Western Illinois University.
