Dr. Sue Myllykangas, associate professor of recreation in Northwest Missouri State University’s Department of Health and Human Services, is the University’s recipient of the 2015 Governor’s Award for Excellence in Education, Northwest announced Sept. 9 during a ceremony to recognize its 10 Dean’s Faculty Award recipients.
“Today we pause for a few minutes to recognize the work of 10 of our colleagues who have excelled at teaching, research, creative activity, service, student support, collaboration and leadership,” Northwest Provost Dr. Timothy Mottet said during opening remarks, noting Dean’s Faculty Award recipients are nominated and selected by their peers.
“What all of you have in common is an understanding that teaching and learning is an interdependent relationship,” Mottet said to the award recipients. “You need your students as much as they need you.”
Myllykangas, who joined the Northwest faculty in 2005, has built a reputation for exhibiting an energy that excites students about their work, Mottet said. She also is a leader and innovator in her department by incorporating technology in the courses she teaches. Each summer, Myllykangas teaches Exploring Recreation Resources, which includes a two-week trip to Colorado for the purpose of providing students with opportunities to visit and interact with agencies in the park and recreation field.
A motivated scholar, she regularly attends workshops and professional development opportunities. She also continues to secure grant funds for teaching, maintains certifications and serves on numerous university committees.
Faculty who nominated Myllykangas for the Governor’s Award provided these observations:
Accepting the honor, Myllykangas credited Northwest faculty and staff, saying she tries to learn from every person with whom she comes in contact.
“We all give everything to our students or we wouldn’t be at Northwest,” she said. “This is a team effort. We’re all in the same boat. We’re all going in the same direction. We all make each other better.”
The Governor’s Award is presented annually to an outstanding faculty member from each of Missouri’s four-year higher education institutions. The Northwest recipient is selected by its Dean’s Council from individuals in each of the University’s three academic colleges who receive the Dean’s Faculty Award for Teaching. Myllykangas, received the Dean’s Faculty Award for Teaching in the College of Education and Human Services and will receive the Governor’s Award during a state ceremony next spring.
