The Northwest Missouri State University Student Dietetics Association (NSDA) will sponsor its fourth annual 5k Community Fun Run/Walk with the Northwest Fitness Center to benefit Backpack Buddies.
The neon glow run will begin on the east side of the Administration Building, at the circle drive and water fountain at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27. Registration begins at 6:30 p.m.
“NSDA is thrilled to plan the 5k again this year and is proud to support an event that gives back to a charitable program that relates to the dietetic field,” said NSDA president Karli Parr, a senior dietetics major from Omaha, Neb., said. “We are working extremely hard to put on a bigger and better event for the community and to help more children through Backpack Buddies.”
Participants may pick up registration forms in Room 311 of the Administration Building, the Student Services Center, or by visiting the Student Dietetics Association’s Facebook page. Registration is $15 for adults and $10 for children 10 years old and younger. Participants who register on or before Sept. 16 will receive a T-shirt.
Individuals who are unable to participate in the event but want to donate may pick up a donation form in Room 311 of the Administration Building. Forms will also be available at the event.
Participants are encouraged to supply their own glow gear, although the Student Dietetic Association will provide some glow gear for the event.
Backpack Buddies is the supplemental weekend feeding program of Second Harvest Community Food Bank. Children are provided with a healthy breakfast, a healthy lunch and a healthy snack each weekend during the school year, including extended breaks. Nodaway County Backpack Buddies partners with The Ministry Center, serves all public elementary schools and provides meals to 250 children during the school year.
Last year’s 5k Community Fun Run/Walk raised $894 for Backpack Buddies. That was enough to provide backpacks of food to six students for the entire school year.
“Our students enjoy planning the 5k event each year and look forward to making an even larger donation this year to such a valuable community program,” said Kelli Wilmes, NSDA advisor and instructor of nutrition and dietetics at Northwest.
Local businesses including Carson’s Sports Grille, Pizza Hut, Hy-Vee, Brighton Wellness Spa, Jass Salon, State Farm Insurance and Guys and Dolls Hair Studio have graciously provided donations and prizes for the event, and additional donations are being collected.
