Northwest Missouri State University alumni and friends are invited to enjoy a fun-filled evening at the ballpark during the fourth annual Northwest Night at the St. Joseph Mustangs Saturday, June 21.
The baseball game featuring the St. Joseph Mustangs and the Sedalia Bombers begins at 7 p.m. at Phil Welch Stadium, 2600 SW Parkway, in St. Joseph. Alumni and friends also are invited to a tailgate from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
The event is sponsored by Northwest Missouri State University and the Northwest Alumni Association. Additional details are provided below.
“Northwest Night at the St. Joseph Mustangs has become a summer tradition for our entire Northwest family,” said Bob Machovsky, director of alumni relations and annual gifts. “The baseball game allows us to represent Northwest and show the strong support and spirit that all Bearcats share. We hope this year’s game will be are largest and best turnout yet.”
The Northwest Alumni Association has 300 free tickets available to Northwest fans. Those game tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis, with a limit of four tickets per person.
Additional game tickets will be available to purchase through the Northwest Alumni Association for a discounted price of $5 after all free tickets are redeemed.

Tickets may be picked up before the game, beginning at 5 p.m., at the green Northwest Alumni Association tent, located outside the stadium’s right field fence.
Look for the Northwest Alumni Association tent beyond the right field fence between 5 and 6:30 p.m. to join the Green and White pregame festivities. The tailgate will feature a meal catered by Hy-Vee, which will include a hamburger or hot dog, chips and a drink at a cost of $5 per person.
Fans are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and may do their own traditional tailgating prior to the game. Representatives of Northwest, its St. Joseph and Kansas City centers will be available to discuss University programs and answer questions. KXCV, the home of the Bearcat Radio Network and Northwest’s award-winning National Public Radio affiliate, also will be on hand with several giveaways.
The tailgate also will feature a live remote with Qcountry 92.7 FM. Additionally, Mustangs players will sign autographs between 5:30 and 6 p.m.; fans must bring their own items to be autographed.
Free baseballs, courtesy of the Northwest Alumni Association, will be given to the first 500 fans to stop by the Alumni Association tent.
Bobby Bearcat and the Bearcat Steppers will be in attendance and will help with the many Northwest-themed promotions and giveaways throughout the game. Ryan Hopkins, the daughter of Lori Hopkins, who serves as associate athletics director for compliance and student services in Northwest’s Department of Athletics, will sing the national anthem. Brandon Benitz, a 2000 Northwest alumnus, will be a guest announcer for the game.
Fans also may enjoy fireworks at the stadium after the game.
Additionally, Northwest will announce the recipient of its 2014 Young Educator of the Year Award. Darryl Johnson, a 1992 Northwest alumnus and 2013 inductee into the National Teachers Hall of Fame, will present the award.
St. Joseph Mustangs players will wear green jerseys in support of Northwest during the game. Last year’s Northwest Night at the St. Joseph Mustangs game drew 4,157 fans, and the game annually ranks among the highest attended of the Mustangs’ season.
The St. Joseph Mustangs are members of the M.I.N.K. Baseball League, a summer collegiate baseball league that includes eight teams from Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska and Kansas.
