Brenda Lewis, instructor of English and Russian in Northwest Missouri State University’s Department of English and Modern Languages, has been awarded a STARTALK Scholarship to attend Concordia Language Villages’ “Second Language and Immersion Methodologies for STARTALK Teachers” summer program June 22 through July 5 at Bemidji State University in Bemidji, Minn.

“Second Language and Immersion Methodologies for STARTALK Teachers” is a 14-day residential program designed for a total of 16 K-16 teachers of Arabic, Russian and Portuguese. The participants enhance their understanding of best practices in teaching language through classroom-based discussion and active participation in language-learning groups and activities.

Class discussions focus on immersion methodology and current research on second language acquisition. Through assigned readings and presentations, participants increase their understanding of current theoretical bases for second language acquisition, instruction, and assessment. The immersion model of instruction is compared to second language instructional principles and helps participants define their personal instructional philosophy. Participants create lesson and unit plans that reflect experiences at the Concordia Language Villages and are based on the World-Readiness Standards.

The STARTALK teacher program is designed as a four-credit graduate course, with the credits being granted through Concordia College. Educators accepted into the program receive a scholarship for the full amount for tuition and room and board through funds provided by a federal STARTALK grant. Selected teachers receive a $2,855 scholarship and a travel stipend.
