The Northwest Missouri State University community can now access resources at the B.D. Owens Library with greater ease on a mobile device through the library’s new responsive website.
A responsive web design scales a screen’s images and text to conform with a user’s device. Text also is shortened to fit the device; for example, “library hours” may be shortened to “hours.”
Now, when a user visits the Owens Library home page, it detects the user’s device. If the individual is on a mobile device, such as an iPad or iPhone, the display automatically redirects to the mobile site. If the user prefers to return to the full site, he or she may opt out of the mobile site.
“The original impetus for doing a mobile site was that we noticed our largest spike in user access was through mobile devices,” Head Librarian Frank Baudino said. “We knew we needed this, and more people are using this kind of platform for doing their business.”
Sarah Park, a reference librarian and web developer at the Owens Library, coordinated the technical aspects of the upgrade and Austin Duda, a student employee at the library and interactive digital media major from Kearney, designed icons and graphics for the website.
The Owens Library also maintains an iPhone app it that enables users to search the library’s catalog, manage personal accounts and find information about the library such as its hours. Users may download and install the app for free by logging on to the iTunes App Store and searching for "Owens Library" or by clicking here.
The B.D. Owens Library houses more than 260,000 books, documents and bound periodicals. Nearly 40,000 periodicals are available in in electronic format, and about 130,000 eBooks are available through the popular EBSCOhost platform.
