Northwest offering second annual Hatha yoga retreat

Registration is open for the second annual Hatha yoga retreat from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, April 12, at Northwest Missouri State University.

The retreat, which is open to the public, will take place in the J.W. Jones Student Union on the Northwest campus and feature six registered yoga instructors, including Rhonda Lesley and Mike Mattock of Northwest Personal Development and Counseling Services. Lesley also teaches a free yoga class each Tuesday and Thursday afternoon on the Northwest campus.

In addition to group yoga sessions, retreat participants will choose from eight special topics courses to attend during two morning sessions, including “Yoga Against the Wall,” “Yoga Back and Core,” “Yoga Basics,” “Mindfulness Meditation” and “Yin Yoga (Deep Stretch).”

No prior yoga experience is necessary. The cost to register is $45, which includes lunch and a T-shirt.

Limited quantities of yoga mats will be available for use during the day, however, participants are encouraged to bring their own mat and a pillow.

Hatha yoga is a gentle, easily mastered practice for relaxation, balance, strength and flexibility. New studies suggest yoga supports healthy immune functioning, emotional regulation, stress management, and improves physical symptoms, such as high blood pressure, muscle and joint stiffness, insomnia and low back pain. Many yoga participants report a sense of heightened mental and physical wellness and relaxation after experiencing just one session of Hatha yoga. It also helps to promote an interdependence between mind, body and spirit, and helps participants find balance in life.
