Northwest Missouri State University’s Student Dietetic Association (NSDA) received the Community Service Award at the Maryville Chamber of Commerce’s annual banquet Jan. 21.
NSDA members Clara Swoboda and Brett Budd accepted the award on behalf of the group.
“The officers of our senior class and myself were very honored and excited about being nominated for this award,” Budd said. “It says a great deal about NSDA, where it's going, and it will hopefully help bring in more students that are thinking about joining dietetics. It feels good being recognized like this because it ensures us that we really are making a difference in the community.”
The award acknowledges NSDA’s commitment to community service. The organization participates in several volunteer activities throughout the community including weekly soup dinners at local churches, meals at the Maryville Senior Center and Horace Mann Laboratory School’s Thanksgiving dinner.
NSDA sponsored its third annual 5K Community Fun Run/Walk last September, raising $900 for Nodaway County’s Backpack Buddies program.
NSDA helps students develop professional contacts, prepare for internships and give back to the community. Senior members of the organization also advise newer members about being involved in the dietetics program.
“We’re seeing a lot of the younger members stepping up and being really enthusiastic about the group,” Swoboda said. “Quite a few wanted to be in leadership roles this past year. They are coming up with new ideas to take out into the community.”
Membership in NSDA is open to any student with an interest in the profession of dietetics and nutrition.
