Local law enforcement members will take 10 Maryville children shopping for Christmas presents Wednesday, Dec. 18, due to community support for their cause.
Each child will spend one hour shopping at a local retail store with a uniformed law enforcement officer as part of the Santa Cops initiative. The Northwest Missouri State University Police Department, along with Maryville Public Safety, Nodaway County Sheriff’s Department and the Missouri State Highway Patrol, raised $1,000 for the shopping trip during a fundraiser this fall.
“It began as a conversation one day to increase our community outreach efforts in a collaborative and positive way, and it developed into this concept,” Monica McCollough, University Police project and communication coordinator, said. “We recognized the importance of giving back to our community, but we wanted to do something that also provided an opportunity for engagement.”
Santa Cops is a non-profit organization adopted by law enforcement agencies throughout the country. Its goal is to support children during the holidays whose families do not receive assistance from other sources and promote a positive image of law enforcement. Children are paired with law enforcement members for holiday shopping.
Members of the local law enforcement agencies hosted a successful kickball tournament in September to raise money for the event. People of all ages participated in the tournament.“We hope to provide is the opportunity for local law enforcement to engage with our community youth and their families in a positive, constructive way,” McCullough said. “This activity is an opportunity that provides positive mentorship and fellowship to all involved.”
