Northwest Missouri State University’s Board of Regents, during a special meeting Monday afternoon, approved a resolution authorizing the University to execute a construction contract for the purpose of building a new facility to house the University Police Department and Purchasing Department.
With the Board’s approval, Northwest will award the contract to EL Crawford Construction Inc. The project, which followed a competitive bid process, is expected to cost about $1.6 million and be completed in June 2014.
Northwest’s University Police and Purchasing departments currently are housed in a facility located on West Ninth Street at the east edge of the campus that was meant to be a temporary home. That building is more than 20 years old and is inadequate for the needs of those departments in today’s environment.
The new facility will allow for the departments to be centrally located for Northwest students and employees. The new site will help University Police reduce response times, and it will improve operational efficiencies by moving all University purchasing functions to one location.
The new 7,300 square-foot metal building will be constructed on the west side of campus, adjacent to the Materials Distribution Center. The Police Department will occupy the majority of the building, which will include offices, dispatch, weapons storage, interrogation rooms, locker rooms, evidence rooms, a fingerprinting station and a garage. The Purchasing department will use offices and storage. The building also will have a shared conference room and restrooms.
Additionally, the new facility will provide the University Police Department with a severe weather shelter where employees can safely dispatch emergency notifications to the campus community.
The Board of Regents is responsible for sound resource management of the University and determining general, educational and financial policies.
