Members of Northwest Missouri State University’s Greek Life organizations spent as many as 42 hours in parked cars Sept. 27-29 to raise funds and awareness for those who are hungry and homeless in Maryville.
As part of the Greeks Against Hunger and Homelessness event, students “lived” in cars parked on the J.W. Jones Student Union’s centennial plaza and collected supplies for the Maryville Ministry Center.
Nine students representing Northwest sororities and fraternities participated. Before they were allowed to exit the vehicles, participants had to collect donations, with each donation being worth a specific amount of minutes. Participants collected enough donations for each participant to leave the cars by Sunday afternoon, Sept. 29.
Greeks Against Hunger and Homelessness collected 1,020 pounds of soap, 260 pounds of canned food and 200 pounds of paper products, totaling 1,480 pounds of donated items to give to the Maryville Ministry Center.
Items participants collected are as follows:
The event was sponsored by Northwest’s Interfraternity Council, National Pan-Hellenic Council and the Panhellenic Council. Cars for the event were provided by Championship Motors in Maryville.
