Student media organizations at Northwest Missouri State University are banding together again to raise awareness about breast cancer while educating the community about warning signs and prevention.
The second annual Breast Fest will be 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 3, on the third floor of the J.W. Jones Student Union.
Northwest’s student-led radio station KZLX 106.7 FM sponsors the event in partnership with television station KNWT and The Northwest Missourian newspaper with contributions from local businesses.
The event will feature breast cancer facts and an on-site mammographer. Students and organizations also are invited to participate in a bra-dazzle contest by decorating bras to win prizes, including student media advertising and underwriting. The deadline to enter the contest is 10 a.m. Thursday.
The success of last year’s inaugural Breast Fest resulted in KZLX being nominated this fall by College Broadcasters Inc. for a Student Production Award in the category of Best Community Involvement. Additionally, the College Media Association has named KZLX as a finalist for a 2013 Pinnacle Award in the category of Radio Station of the Year, and KNWT is a finalist in the category of TV Station of the Year.
Northwest student media is nationally competitive and regularly garners recognition from national college media associations. Students involved in Northwest student media organizations gain real-world learning experiences in radio, television and print, through a converged print and online newspaper, a yearbook with DVD supplement, an online arts and entertainment magazine, video and audio recording studios, and through an internships.
