Neon glow run, annual 5k fun run/walk to benefit Backpack Buddies

The Northwest Missouri State University Student Dietetics Association will sponsor its third annual 5k Community Fun Run/Walk with the Northwest Fitness Center to benefit Backpack Buddies.

The neon glow run, a new component of the event this year, will begin on the east side of the Administration Building at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21. Registration begins at 6:30 p.m.

The Student Dietetics Association will provide one glow bracelet and sell a limited amount of glow gear for the race. Participants are encouraged to wear additional glow gear.

Participants may pick up registration forms in Room 307-B of the Administration Building, or by going to the Student Dietetics Association’s Facebook page. Registration is $15 for adults and $10 for children 10 years old and younger. Participants who register before Sept. 18 receive a T-shirt.

Individuals who are unable to participate in the event but want to donate may pick up a donation form in the foods and nutrition Office in Room 311 of the Administration Building. Forms will also be available at the race.

Backpack Buddies is the supplemental weekend feeding program of Second Harvest Community Food Bank. Children are provided with a healthy breakfast, a healthy lunch and a healthy snack each weekend during the school year, including extended breaks. Children receive food based on four rotating menus offered throughout the year. Nodaway County Backpack Buddies partners with The Ministry Center Inc., serves all public elementary schools and provides meals to 250 children during the school year.

Last year’s 5k Community Fun Run/Walk raised $735 for Backpack Buddies. That was enough to provide backpacks of food to seven students for the entire school year. This year, Clara Swoboda, president of the Student Dietetics Association, hopes the event raises more money to sponsor additional children.

“Our goal is to raise awareness of this program,” Swoboda, a senior dietetics major and psychology minor from Parkville, said. “We want to remind Maryville and other local towns that there are still many children in need within our own communities. We want to show that one simple donation can help a child immensely.”

The event also will feature informational tables sponsored by various organizations and businesses.
