Safe Ride program receives grant, expands services this fall

Northwest Missouri State University’s Safe Ride Home program will expand its services this fall to include a bus-style route on a shuttle vehicle.

Previously, Safe Ride operated solely on a call-in, taxi-style service. Beginning Friday, Aug. 23, Safe Ride will implement the shuttle service as well. Drop-off and pick-up locations will be marked throughout the Northwest campus and Maryville city limits with the Safe Ride logo.

“The shuttle addition is significant because it allows flexibility for the users of the program,” Monica McCollough, University Police programs manager, said. “Our goal is to provide safe and timely transportation for our students in a way that accommodates the level of call volume the program experiences and the style of usage that our students prefer.”

The tentative route includes stops throughout campus and along Main Street. The shuttle will run every Friday from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. Northwest students must present their Bearcat Card to ride the shuttle. Guests are allowed to accompany a student. Each shuttle seats 13 people.

Although the shuttle will operate on Fridays only, Safe Ride vans will continue offering their normal hours: Wednesday from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m.; Thursday from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m.; Friday from 4 p.m. to 4 a.m.; and Saturday from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m.

The expansion is made possible by a $10,000 contribution from Northwest’s Student Senate as well as a grant award for $20,800 from the Gladys Rickard Charitable Trust.

Since its inception in 2004, Safe Ride has significantly reduced the number of harmful driving situations, including driving while intoxicated, in the community by 66 percent. The service also promotes a greener form of transportation for students. University Police administers the program, which employs about 20 Northwest students.
