Owens Library unveils new online search tool to find resources

Patrons of the B.D. Owens Library at Northwest Missouri State University may now access the library’s holdings using a more powerful search tool on the Owens Library homepage.

The new “Search All” option finds credible library materials and relevant Google Scholar results – all in one search. When a keyword is entered in the search box, the results return references to everything the library has on the topic, in paper or digital.

The “one-click-and-you’re-in” returns results in categories such as articles, books, eBooks, media, websites and guides. Patrons can then further refine the results.

Northwest students participated in a pilot test of the search tool earlier this year and said it helped them easily realize the scope of the library’s resources.

B. D. Owens Library is a service-oriented library in a 116,000-square-foot facility on the Northwest campus that is designed to meet the varied learning and research needs of Northwest students and employees. The library collection and services support scholarly research and provide current information that promotes student competencies concerning lifelong learning, critical thinking, communication and research.

The library’s website provides on- and off-campus access to thousands of journal titles and eBooks for Northwest students and employees through the library’s robust catalog. Course-focused guides and tutorials along with reference and citing assistance also are available. Reference service includes a broad array of delivery methods, including walk-in, by appointment, email and phone. The library’s very popular “Help with Research” program also provides students and employees the opportunity to receive personalized research assistance on a specific topic.

The library houses more than 260,000 books, documents and bound periodicals. Nearly 70,000 periodicals are available in electronic format. Approximately 120,000 eBooks are available through the popular EBSCOhost platform.

Additional access to more than 23 million items is available through the statewide catalog maintained by the MOBIUS consortium of libraries. MOBIUS items arrive at Owens Library in three to five working days. Interlibrary loan service is available for materials not available within the state.
