Northwest Missouri State University alumnus Matthew Trussell has been named director of the University’s Small Business and Technology Development Center (SBTDC) in Chillicothe.
As center director, Trussell provides leadership, expertise and training to business clients. He also works closely with Northwest’s Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE).
The SBTDC is designed to strengthen the competitiveness of Missouri businesses. It is focused on creating economic impact through the counseling and training of businesses with fewer than 500 employees.
“Matthew has the knowledge and experience to enhance business relationships and develop new business strategies with entrepreneurs,” said Larry Lee, SBTDC regional director and CIE director. “He can also maintain and educate existing relationships to strengthen the competitiveness of Missouri’s small business owners.”
Trussell most recently taught in the Chillicothe School District and was self-employed as a home repairman.
From 2005 to 2012, he was a vocational agriculture instructor and physical education instructor in Bosworth. He taught agriculture science, agriculture finance, exploratory agriculture, agriculture business, agriculture leadership and physical education.
Additionally, from 1992 to 2008, Trussell worked with Tater Creek Angus, an entrepreneurial enterprise that coordinated the breeding and selection of cows for artificial insemination. During its first 10 years, the business expanded from an initial two heads to more than 65 females in production.
Trussell received a Master of Science in education from Northwest in 2008 and a Bachelor of Science in agricultural economics from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 2001.
He assumes the position vacated by Steve Holt, who retired in June.
The Northwest SBTDC falls under the direction of Northwest Missouri State University and is sponsored by the U.S. Small Business Administration. The Northwest SBTDC’s geographical region covers 17 counties spanning from Atchison County, south to Platte County and east to Livingston County. Its offices are located at the CIE on the Northwest campus in Maryville, in St. Joseph and in Chillicothe. For more information about the Northwest SBTDC, click here or call 660.562.1701.
