Northwest Missouri State University’s Department of Fine and Performing Arts has announced the appointment of Kathryn E. Strickland as director of athletic bands and assistant professor of percussion.
She will begin her duties at Northwest in August.
Strickland is completing a doctorate degree in music education at Louisiana State University. She also received her Master of Music degree in music education degree and Bachelor of Music Education degree from LSU. At LSU, Strickland has taught a variety of courses in music education, conducted the LSU Bengal Brass Pep Band and served as composer, arranger and conductor of the LSU Drumline.
A veteran teacher for 12 years in the public schools of Louisiana, Strickland spearheaded changes and additions to the Louisiana All-State Percussion Audition Materials, has had articles published in The Louisiana Musician and has been a Conference Presenter on several occasions at the Louisiana Music Educators Annual Conference. She has presented papers and posters at the LMEA Conference and at the National Association for Music Education Biennial Conference.
Strickland has served as a board member of the LMEA and is active as a guest conductor, percussion clinician and adjudicator. She holds memberships in Kappa Kappa Psi National Honorary Band Fraternity in which she is an honorary member, the Louisiana Music Educators Association, the National Association for Music Education, the National Band Association, the Percussive Arts Society and Phi Beta Mu International Bandmasters Fraternity.
In February, Northwest’s Department of Fine and Performing Arts also announced the appointment of John Bell to director of bands. With the addition of Strickland the department will have three band directors and music educators with a combined total of nearly 50 years of public school teaching experience.
