Northwest students place high at national agriculture contest

The Department of Agricultural Sciences at Northwest Missouri State University competed April 3-5 in the North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture (NACTA) Judging Conference and Contest, where they placed among the top four teams in the nation in eight contest categories, and six Northwest students placed among the top 10 individuals overall in their contests.

Northwest sent 26 agriculture undergraduate students to Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas, for the annual contest. They competed with more than 500 ag students from more than 40 two-year and four-year colleges and universities throughout the country.

The NACTA contest is held each spring at a designated host institution in the United States.  The contest provides the opportunity for Northwest undergraduate students to compete in various skill and knowledge-based events. This year’s contests included a knowledge bowl, agricultural business management, horse judging, livestock judging, agricultural computers, crops judging, soil judging, dairy judging, livestock management, agricultural communications and meat judging.

The Northwest agriculture team’s success at the NACTA contest this year is a follow-up to the team’s first-place overall finish at last year’s contest. Northwest will host the NACTA conference and contest April 10-12, 2014.
