The Northwest Missouri State University wrestling club maintained its reputation as one the top teams in the country with a third-place finish at the National Collegiate Wrestling Association Division II National Championship March 13-17 in Allen, Texas.
The team sent five national qualifiers to compete at the national tournament, and Travis Peter (141 lbs.) came out as an All-American.
After a first-round bye, Peter won his first match but was sent to the consolation bracket after a third round loss. He won three more matches, going 4-2 in the tournament and finishing seventh in his weight class.
Danny Apgar (165 lbs.), Dray Carl (174 lbs.), Blake Schoeninger (197 lbs.) and CJ Hucke (235 lbs.) also qualified for the national tournament but did not place among the top eight.
The Northwest wrestling club was established in 2005 to provide students with opportunities to participate in organized wrestling competitions. It competes in the Southwest Conference, one of six conferences in the National Collegiate Wrestling Association. Dr. Tim Crowley is the club’s advisor, and Daniel Jennings, a senior physical education major from Lathrop, is the club coach.
The club has sent a representative to national competition every year since its founding. The club finished as the NCWA Division II runner-up last year and won the NCWA Division II national championship in 2011.
