The Northwest Missouri State University wrestling club will send five wrestlers to its national tournament after a strong showing at the NCWA Southwest Conference tournament March 1-2 at the University of Texas.
Individually, Northwest wrestlers earned one second-place finish and four third-place finishes. Overall, Northwest earned 90 points and finished fourth in a field of 11 teams.
Northwest entered the tournament having won the conference championship the last two years. Lindenwood University in St. Charles took this year’s title, however, in the realigned Southwest Conference.
“We knew it was going to be tough to win as a team, but we knew we had good chances at individual success,” club coach Daniel Jennings, a senior physical education major from Lathrop, said. “Having five national qualifiers is a successful day for me as the coach, especially with two of them being in their first year of NCWA competition.
“The way the guys wrestled at conference was the best some of them have looked all year. Every single one of the wrestlers gave every match their best effort, and that's all I can ask for as a coach. We were in the best shape we have been all year.”
Danny Apgar (165 lbs.) led the way for Northwest, placing second and qualifying for his third consecutive national tournament appearance.
Finishing third individually and also qualifying for the national tournament were Travis Peter (141 lbs.), Dray Carl (174 lbs.), Blake Schoeninger (197 lbs.) and CJ Hucke (235 lbs.).
Alex Freund (184 lbs.) placed fourth and Patrick Masterson (174 lbs.) placed sixth.
The national qualifiers will travel March 13-17 to Allen, Texas, to compete in the NCWA National Championship tournament.
The Northwest wrestling club was established in 2005 to provide students with opportunities to participate in organized wrestling competitions. It competes in the Southwest Conference, one of six conferences in the National Collegiate Wrestling Association. Dr. Tim Crowley is the club's advisor.
The club has sent a representative to national competition every year since its founding. The club finished as the NCWA Division II runner-up last year and won the NCWA Division II national championship in 2011.
