Charlie Standiford, a boiler operator at Northwest Missouri State University, was recently awarded the Officer of the Year Award by the Missouri State Fair Fire Department.
Standiford is a volunteer firefighter for Tri-C Fire and Rescue in Conception Junction and serves as captain of the Missouri State Fair Fire Department. He has volunteered there for 16 years.
“It was a real honor, and it shocked me,” Standiford said. “I just do my job. I respect my crew and the people we work with. I always tell my crew, ‘I would never ask you to do anything that I wouldn’t do.’”
Officer of the Year is one of five awards presented annually to the volunteer fire department, which is comprised of volunteer and career firefighters from across Missouri. Standiford said the department, now in its 50th year, provides daily training exercises in emergency and disaster response.
Standiford is committed to volunteering at the Missouri State Fair for years to come. He also hopes to lead the volunteer fire department as chief. He enjoys working with other firefighters, receiving training in new fields and interacting with families at the fair.
“I always making sure my crew and other crews are safe and the operation is running well, because my goal is to one of these days be the fire chief of the Missouri State Fair,” Standiford said. “Sometimes you just do the best you can, and you get recognition for it.”
